2 CD edition. History rocked and rock made history during a sold-out three-gig stand at Madison Square Garden in late February 2008 when icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed a concert together for the first time since their all-too-brief days in the legendary Blind Faith in 1969. Whether they will ever team again is unknown. NYC: Vietnam Veterans Plaza

NYC: Vietnam Veterans Plaza

The triangular area now known as Vietnam Veterans Plaza was built in 1971. The site, formerly known as Jeanette Park, was named in honor the The Jeanette, the flagship of an ill-fated Arctic expedition from 1879-1881. In 1982, the site was chosen as the home for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and named by the City Council in honor of the memorial, which was dedicated on May 6, 1985--the tenth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

An international design competition attracted more than 1,100 entrants from 46 states and six foreign countries. The winning design, which emerged following a two-phased blind competition, was submitted by a three-member team from New York City: architects William Fellows and Peter Wormser, and Vietnam veteran Joseph Ferrandino. It was unveiled by Mayor Koch at a press conference in City Hall on May 29, 1984.

Over the next year, the Commission received more than 3,000 pieces of correspondence from more than 600 veterans, their loved ones, their next of kin. A subcommittee selected excerpts of 83 letters , poems, and journal entries written by 65 individuals, along with statements by the four American presidents under whom the war in Southeast Asia was waged, and brief news clips to amplify and give context to the excerpts, that were etched into the glass block of the 16-foot high, 66-foot long memorial.

The highlights of the redicated plaza in 2001 includes a pulsating water element, a 125-foot long "Walk of Honor." The names of 1,741 New York City residents lost to the war, from Rosario R. Abbate to Andrew G. Zissu, are etched onto stainless steel plaques, or steles, affixed to a dozen granite pylons. A map of Southeast Asia, also fabricated in stainless steel, greets visitors at the beginning of the Walk.

nyc marathon: blind marathoner!

ho. lee. cow, the achilles runners take the event's inspirational capabilities to a whole new level.

Paula Radcliffe of england won her second nyc marathon with a time of 2:23.09 after recovering from injuries AND having her first child, Isla, nine months ago. she is also the world record holder at 9:15.25. do not be fooled by post-natal/post-injury performance, the nyc course is STOUT. times here are never record breakers. Second place for women went to Gete Wami of ethiopia just 23 seconds behind Radcliffe, though Wami did win the overall World Marathon Majors title.

Martin Lel of kenya (oh, those graceful antilopes) took his second nyc men's championship at 2:09.03. his first win was in 2003. it was a VERY close race to the finish between him and Abderrahim Goumri of morocco.

He was soon onto bigger and better things: a new exclusive job managing money for a European scion and a new romance with an exotic beauty.

...SIDE

But when his best friend turns up murdered in Dean's apartment and an astronomical sum goes missing from his client's account, the young banker finds himself in unfamiliar territory: a wanted fugitive on the underside of New York City.
